    “For over a decade, I’ve been involved in frontline work against the death penalty. In recent years, I’ve stood in execution chambers and held the hands of eight different men while the state murders them. In each of those circumstances, I have vehemently opposed the execution. So much so, I’ve often blamed myself for not being able to stop it. After the tragedy, I’d get home and stay awake at night wondering what more I could’ve done.     “I think churches feel obligated to break out the red letter words from Jesus found in the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew at least once a year, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.
